My story

I am going to Windsurf on 3 May 2009 at Hayling Island to raise money for Windsurfing4CancerResearch (W4CR) who will use it to help fund cancer research, education and support. 

Whilst undergoing an emergency operation for appendicitis, in May 2006, a tumour was found and removed from my bowel. Colon cancer was confirmed and chemotherapy was undertaken for the following 9 months. After a clear scan in March 2007 I was told to “carry on with the rest of my life”. I went skiing, played a lot of tennis and windsurfed most weekends and my strength improved.

Last September (2008) I thought that with my “three year anniversary” (of being told I had colon cancer) coming up I should attempt something personally to raise money for Cancer charities and projects. I decided to windsurf at Hayling from “sunrise to sunset” and get people to sponsor or join me for part of the day. My idea was outlined to fellow windsurfers, unaware that a forthcoming scan was to have shocking results.

Whilst at Weymouth Speed Week I had to attend my hospital as the scan showed significant changes in a year. Two biopsies had been taken from a mass in my lung and neck thyroid and I was told "cancer had returned".

Twelve fortnightly sessions of chemotherapy has meant no sports for about seven months but my sponsored sailing idea was not postponed because Dave White (not only a top windsurfer but he has also beaten cancer) said he would front the sponsored sailing idea.

Also, as my prescribed chemotherapy should finish by mid April, I plan to be on the water on 3rd May, although not for 15 hours! It will be a great day!
