Mongol Rally 2010 · 24 July 2010 ·

Chauncy Maples Malawi Trust is developing vessel-led solutions to bring greatly improved healthcare to isolated communities on Lake Malawi. This will lead to increased school attendance, fewer working days lost to preventable illness, and better life chances for these communities.

Story

With no back up crew or help of any kind we will be driving a 1999 Suzuki Jimny to Mongolia from London. Its gargantuan engine (1298cc) is capable of massive speeds of up to 60mph (100kph) on a good road, downhill with no luggage. The carefully selected team of Gareth, Andrew, Danny and Hooper have been specifically chosen for the lack of mechanical know-how and love of adventure.

Now, the Mongol Rally isn't just about adventure, it's also about raising huge sacks of cash for charity. We have chosen to raise money for Chauncy Maples - A renovation of Africa's oldest ship which will become Lake Malawi's Clinic to help by bringing basic health care to 500,000 lakeside people of Malawi.

A third of the way around the earth, from London to Mongolia via a plethora of countries most people haven't heard of in a car that has an engine suitable for nipping to the shops. Starting from England, the rally finishes in the Mongolian capital Ulaan Baatar around five weeks later. It's about 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometres) depending on the route. The route we've chosen has changed a few times due to visa problems. Check out the route page on our website for the current route which goes through 14 countries.

This is an annual event with lots of teams taking part and following they're own routes and itineraries. In a normal year just over half the teams make the finish line in one piece but all of the teams raise lots of money for charity.
