It's hard to believe that only a few weeks ago- the idea of going Africa for the summer was in fact- just and idea. Yet, with less than 2 week to go before leaving (and possibly a little under prepared -in true Ezra tradition!) I will be abandoning my fortunate western lifestyle, to volunteer for two months with Tzedek in Tamale - the capital of the Northern Region of Ghana. Tzedakah (Hebrew- justice) loosely translated to 'charity' in English, is not only the giving of money but the giving of time. Tzedek's ethos encompasses this very notion, aiding some of the world's poorest communities- regardless of race or religion. In setting up programs they offer people the opportunity to help themselves rather than relying on handouts, empowering them and their families with dignity and chance of a better, sustainable future, free form poverty and disease. Such programs include: 1) Muslim Family Counselling Services- Kumasi, Ghana Youth unemployment in the selected communities continues to be a problem. Parents resort to sending their children onto the streets to engage in menial jobs in order to make a living. For many, unable to complete basic education work is typically unstable, low paid and dangerous. In order to cope, street children adopt any possible survival strategies, including begging, prostitution, crime and drug peddling Muslim Family Counselling Services train thirty young people in marketable skills aiming to deliver life-enhancing skills along with specific and ongoing support to marginalized youths with the view of strengthening their economic capacity to re-enter the mainstream society as micro-entrepreneurs. Skills on offer include hairdressing, tailoring, dressmaking, electrical repairs and computer literacy. In addition, the participants receive life skills training and training in establishing their own businesses thereby breaking the cycle of poverty in these communities 2) CRSD (Centre for Rural Systems and Development) - Tamil Nadu, South India This Self Help Women's Development aims to improve lives of women from the lowest Castes and economic groups both economically and politically The programme organises self-help groups of 12-18 women around with savings, credit and income generating activities. This enables members to escape from the clutches of traditional money-lenders and to develop confidence and skills, as well as increasing incomes. However, in order for these programs to come into fruition, financial help is still imperative. In donating, you will NOT be subsidising my trip however you will have the opportunity to really make a difference, like I hope to be doing in the coming months. Please look on their website www.tzedek.org.uk for more information on current projects.
