Story

The World’s first Global Movie Night is set to start at 8pm GMT on SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14 2013 with the iconic film DIRTY DANCING.

On the anniversary of Patrick Swayze’s (aka ‘Johnny’) death (September 142009), people all around the world will press play and start watching this much-loved movie, ‘Dirty Dancing’, at the same time, 8pm GMT.

In doing so, I hope that they will also pledge a mere £3 to Pancreatic Cancer UK to raise awareness of the disease that killed Patrick in just 20 months from his diagnosis.

Why raise awareness of this disease? Well, pancreatic cancer is the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the UK, and the 5-year survival rate is less than 4%, which means if 100 people in a room were diagnosed with the disease, only 4 would be alive in 5 years time. This survival rate hasn’t improved in over 40 years. But there are ways you can help.

Nicola Clarke, the organiser behind Dirty Dancing Day says, “I’ll never get around to walking The Great Wall of China or hiking to Machu Picchu for charity, and as I’m regularly distracted by custard creams, I’ll certainly never be running a marathon for charity either, but, I do believe in charity and I do believe in doing what I can when I can, and as such, THIS is my charity fundraising idea.”

“We don’t always want to commit to monthly donations, we don’t always have change on us when stopped on the street and many of us simply don’t have a lot spare to give these days.”

“All I’m asking for is a minimum donation of £3, the cost of renting this film from Blockbuster, or buying a copy from HMV, a small, onetime payment that you can make from your living room or on your mobile phone when you’re waiting in line for the bus.”

How can you get involved in Dirty Dancing Day? It couldn’t be easier, just join the Facebook page, www.facebook.com/dirtydancingday or follow me on Twitter @shesnottweet and donate through the Just Giving page,www.justgiving.com/dirtydancingday

Then simply plan how you’re going to spend the evening of September 14.
Will you ‘rent’ the movie from yourself and watch it alone? Will you do as Jeni Tong and the ladies of Bottisham, Cambridge are doing and organise an event in your local village and spend the night singing along to the soundtrack while drinking watermelon based cocktails? Or will you be close enough to join Candice Howells and the ladies of Fish Hoek in Cape Town who plan to dress their babies in ‘Nobody Puts Baby In a Corner’ onesies while Mum’s also dress up in (slightly different...!) ‘Baby’ outfits inspired by the film?

Wherever you are, whoever you watch this fantastic film with, remember that you are part of something, the first Global Movie Night the world has ever participated in, but please, and this is the important bit, PLEASE remember that we are doing this to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer, and pledge just £3 to Pancreatic Cancer UK to help others have ‘The Time Of Their Lives,’ just a little longer.

Every penny helps and I will forever grateful for anything that you can give to help me raise money for Pancreatic Cancer. The survival rate is shockingly low and I want to do anything I can to help ease the suffering of others.
Please, give anything that you can, it WILL make a difference.

Thank you in advance you gorgeous, generous and caring people xxx

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.
