Water for Kids is a small charity, set up by Environmental Health Officers, which provides safe water, sanitation and health education for children and communities in developing countries.
The average life expectancy in Zambia is 42 years almost the lowest for any country in the world and one in eight children die before the age of five. In rural areas of Zambia only 41% of the population have access to safe drinking water and only 13% have sanitation.
In the early 70's I spent 3 years as the District Health Inspector for Kalomo District in Southern Province (a bush area around Livingstone that is about the size of Wales). During that time I carried out research into Bilhazia (a debilitating worm transmitted to humans by water snails) and persuaded the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Education to pool resources in the rural areas (one borehole being better than 3 wells).
