A bit of history
With the formalities over, here's a brief background to how this DW malarky started. Pete and I met back in October 2010, whilst training for the 2011 World Dragonboat Championship at Tampa, Florida. Suffice to say, we got on reasonably well, so fast forward to 2013, we decided that we'd take on a different challenge - the DW race, all 125 miles of it.
Dragonboat racing is usually fairly short and sharp, mostly lasting 200m-500m, with the longest races normally covering 2km. The New York outrigger race I took part in this year was longer at 12 miles, so 125 miles is uncharted territory for us.
However, that's part of the appeal. It also helps that we're slightly unbalanced...metaphorically and physically. Why else would we end up in the water, next to an upturned canoe? Twice.

We also thought that the race would be a good opportunity to raise money for Cancer Research. I've been fortunate in that good health is not something I've had to worry about. However I witnessed my mother in law pass away from cancer back on Saturday 13 August 1994 at 8.45pm. I'm glad that we were with her to the end but it certainly left an indelible mark. If you can help us raise some money to combat this disease, that's grand.
Pete's Story
On the 4th May 2006 (Amy's birthday) my wife Debbi lost her dad Claude to brain cancer, it was the most devastating event that had ever touched our family and she's still not fully recovered from it.
In 2013 my own mum Liseby received a diagnosis of Non-hodgkins Lymphoma, thankfully a slow growing cancer, but still as scary as hell! :(
