A team of ten cyclists fundraising for Durham Cathedral Young Singers took part in the Durham Big Ride on September 6th. The team was made up of Cathedral employees, current Cathedral choristers, former Cathedral choristers and family members. 205 miles were cycled with seven team members doing the twenty-five mile course and three doing the ten mile course. Thankfully weather conditions were perfect, not to hot and not to cold, with no rain. If you would like to help the team raise money for Durham Cathedral Young Singers you can donate on line here. If you would like to support but don't want to donate on line, donations can be made by using one of the Cathedral's blue donation envelopes - please write on the envelope Durham Cathedral Young Singers / Durham Big Ride.
Durham Cathedral Young Singers are part of the Cathedral’s busy music outreach programme. Every Saturday morning during school term time around 60 children from County Durham and the North East meet for musical fun at the Chorister School. The expertise at the Cathedral is used to make choral singing available to young people in the wider community. Members are between 8 and 13 and have the opportunity to take part in festivals, concerts and events throughout the year. The choir has exciting plans for the year ahead.
Many members of Durham Cathedral Young Singers become involved through the work the Cathedral and Choristers do with schools across the region. Each term the Choristers visit eight primary schools. After the visit the Cathedral's Director of Music Outreach continues to work with the pupils and teachers at the schools in preparation for a concert at the Cathedral. Each concert involves around 150 children and are lively musical occasions.
