Stroud Half Marathon · 23 September 2008

We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

We are taking part in the Stroud Half marathon and we need your Sponsorship!

Some of the Edgecoms team are taking part in the Stroud half marathon to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSH).

Great Ormond Street Hospital treats many thousands of patients each year - children who are suffering from the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening conditions. GOSH raise funds to support the hospital in its valuable work, and to ensure that it remains a world-class hospital.

Dave Edgecombe, Managing Director of Edgecoms, in particular has personal connections with the hospital.  Declan, Dave’s son suffered from long gap oesophageal atresia, meaning that his oesophagus wasn’t connected to his stomach. Declan had to undergo pioneering surgery in Cardiff University hospital to stretch the oesophagus to join his stomach via a series of wires and spacers. This procedure was performed twice under the guidance of the senior consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

In January 2007, Declan visited Great Ormond Street Hospital to undergo corrective surgery to join the oesophagus to the stomach. Up until this point Declan had only been able to feed milk via a tube placed into his stomach.

Declan spent over a month at Great Ormond Street Hospital. During this period Dave and his family experienced many highs (Declan finally drinking milk via a bottle for the first time) and lows (Suspected meningitis, having to be paralysed and sedated for 2 weeks to enable the corrective surgery to heal).  The nursing staff, doctors and parent support team were fantastic and very supportive during this time. Declan spent the first 6 ½ months of his life in either Cardiff University Hospital or Great Ormond Street Hospital, but now at 2 years old, he is fully recovered and enjoying life thanks to the staff at both hospitals!

Edgecoms Ltd are committed to supporting the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSH) in all the fantastic work that they do.  By doing this half marathon, we hope to give back something to the hospital in return for all the wonderful work they have done over the years.

Your support can make a huge difference to to the hospital by helping them through a huge period of re-development as they try to rebuild two-thirds of their clinical buildings, allowing them to treat an extra 20,000 children a year from 2010!
