EJF - Who we are and what we do!
Why your donation matters
Supporting EJF is about helping to tackle the root cause of environmental problems and to empower the people who suffer most from environmental abuses to find peaceful ways of preventing them.
We will use your donation to continue to work on issues that otherwise go ignored, bringing critical awareness and action in difficult or dangerous places and enabling vulnerable people to protect their own environment by providing training programmes that share knowledge and build local capacity.
For example, our community boat project in Sierra Leone in one year ran surveillance operations leading to a $4m bust of illegally caught fish and has saved over 60 lives by acting as an emergency ambulance.
Donate now - your support will save lives and protect the natural environment.
Case study: donations in action
In Sierra Leone and Liberia EJF is working with local communities and Government Ministries to develop the first Marine Protected Areas.
We have also developed a community surveillance programme that works with artisanal fishermen to monitor the activities of illegal vessels and report them to the authorities. The project led to over 1,100 tonnes of suspected illegal fish being seized by Spanish authorities – valued at over £4m in spring 2011.
The small surveillance boat also operates as an essential water ambulance for remote island communities whose access to health care is otherwise a 5 hour paddle away, by dug-out canoe.
In just one year the boat has saved the lives of over 60 people.
It has rescued fishermen when their canoes came into trouble at sea; transported women in labour safely to hospital where they survived in a country where 1 in 8 mothers dies giving birth; and children and elders suffering from sickness and malaria who were able to get treatment.
EJF's boat enables communities in Sierra Leone to effectively reduce illegal pirate fishing and has saved over 60 lives in just one year of action
