I have entered and managed to run the Great Ethiopian Run which is a 10Km race on
22nd of November. At 2000+ metres above sea level and in scorching sun along with 23,000 people, I made it round in 1 hour 20 minutes. Only about 52 minutes slower than the winner!
I am raising money for some work FARM Africa is doing in the far south of Ethiopia in South Omo. I went down there at the beginning of October. It is one of the most desolate and harsh environments I have ever seen. FARM Africa is working with pastoralist communities including the Ebore women shown in one of the photos, helping them plan their own development. These communities are subjected to drought, flooding, animal diseases epidemics, poor health and conflict on a regular basis. Right now there is a silent drought going on. The rains failed in March/ April and nothing, apart from spiky scrub is growing down there. Cattle are getting thinner and thinner, animal and human health is declining rapidly and people are resorting to eating donkeys. FARM Africa will be working in these areas for the next 3 years and I want to raise money to add to the Community Response Funds that they are setting up. These funds will be managed by the communities and allow them to implement their contingency plans for responding to the disasters which affect them.
