About trek Kilimanjaro 2007...In January 2007 Eleanor Gleeson will be taking part in trek Kilimanjaro 2007 – a challenge designed to push the participants’ physical and mental limits as they climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. On each of the 8 days, I will be trekking for 6 – 10 hours over difficult terrain, and on the night I attempt the summit will be climbing, scrambling and probably crawling, for an excruciating 16 hours! All this plus some serious altitude to contend with.
About CHASE hospice care for Children...CHASE exists to provide help and support to families with children and young people who are not expected to reach their nineteenth birthday. The journey these families share with CHASE can continue from diagnosis of the child’s life-limiting condition, through to bereavement and beyond. It is a relationship that can last for many years and without it, many families would find it difficult to cope.
Getting fighting fit…although the idea of my fleshy frame clambering up (and back down) Mount Kilimanjaro is quite frankly alarming! The training I have needed and still need to get me up, over and alive at the end is no joke. In less than 10 days time I will be standing at the foot of a scarliy high mountain! So, what have I been doing in preparation? Well...for the last 3 months my lovely (strict - and sometimes just plain mean!) personal trainer, Clara, at Esporta has been putting me through my paces. 8 hours of cardio work in the comfort of the gym while enjoying Deal or No Deal, 4 x 4 hour hikes in the treacherous Surrey hills, and attempting to put myself into the most unnatural positions during my pilates session, plus fitting in a swim here and there. The training is tough, and a few short months ago would have been damn near impossible! With all of this I should be skipping up Kilimanjaro like a mountain goat!!
