My story

                        Land’s End to John O’Groats

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to help raise money for Naomi House Children’s Hospice (Wessex Children's Hospice Trust) by sponsoring me. The charity will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Not quite sure why… but I am cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) in May.  My journey begins on Sunday 4th May, with the intention of completing it in 15 legs, finishing at John O’Groats on Sunday 18th May.  I have obtained the route for the journey from the Cycle Touring Club which uses mainly minor roads, stopping on route at Youth Hostels.  The total distance of the trip is just under 1,000 miles (976), making each leg an average of about 65 miles.  I am undertaking the journey on my own and carrying all that I need (hopefully) along with me. My good wife Donna is taking me to the starting point of my journey, Lands End and friend from work, Andrew Smith, has very generously offered to collect me from the finish at John O Groats.

In preparation for the trip I obtained a 20 week training plan which I started just before Xmas. To date (23 April) I have covered just over 2200 miles, with another 200 to go before I start the trip !!

Although the trip began as a personal goal of mine, I am using this opportunity to raise money for Charity and I have selected the “Naomi House Children’s Hospice” as the beneficiary. BAE Systems (my employers) have agreed to support my chosen charity and will make a donation to add to what I raise from my work colleagues.

Naomi House, located in Winchester, provides care and support to terminally ill children and their families from the counties of Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Surrey, West Sussex, and Wiltshire.  Naomi House children’s hospice opened in June 1997 to provide respite care, terminal care and bereavement support for children and families from across the south of England.  The Wessex Children’s Hospice Trust was originally set up in 1992 and by 1997 over £5 million had been raised to build and open Naomi House. Places like Naomi House receive no government funding, and therefore rely entirely on fundraising and gifts to maintain its running. More details are available on their website www.naomihouse.org.uk

I am sure you will all agree that this is a very worthwhile cause and I sincerely hope you will be able to support me in this venture.

Many thanks for your support.
