After just missing out on the 2010 London Marathon due to stress fractures in my tibia, I'm back up and running and here's why I'm running the Adidas half-marathon, the British 10k, the Royal Parks half-marathon and The 2011 Virgin London Marathon........
In 2005 whilst at university a friend and I joined The Anthony Nolan Trust's bone marrow register, and then to be honest, I never really thought about it again, until December 2008 when I received a phone call from the trust saying I was a potential match for a patient in need of a transplant. After several tests I donated bone marrow in June 2009 and thankfully the recipient is now making good progress on his road to recovery.
The Anthony Nolan Trust is the UK’s largest and most successful bone marrow register and saves on average two lives a day. However, for every two people whose lives were saved there are about another two patients who do not find a match and did not receive a transplant. Bone marrow transplants are the last option for many patients suffering with Leukaemia, Lymphoma and other life-threatening blood diseases. Therefore more donors on the register will improve the proportion of patients receiving a successfully matched donor and will save even more lives.
By sponsoring me to run the Marathon for this amazing charity the money will not only go to adding more potential donors to the register but also into life-saving research into improving the chances of finding a match, how to ensure transplants are as successful as possible and taking back as many lives from Leukaemia as we can.
