I just want to say a huge thankyou to everybody who has sponsored me. I am now home after an experience of a lifetime. Although I did not make the summit (just over half way up) due to altitude sickness I have no regrets and I just hope that none of you feel "let down" - I know I did my very best. Just an update on Michael. A few weeks before I left for the trek he fell down his stairs and fractured his neck of femur - after two operations he is now on the road to recovery and once again Deafblind Scotland have been there to give him as much support as possible. Feel proud of yourselves that your contribution will have gone towards making life a little easier for Michael and others in his position. Again thankyou to all of you from me and Deafblind Scotland. Can you imagine losing both your sight and hearing? I have a very close friend called Michael and he knows how it feels. He has no sight and is gradually losing his hearing and yet he is an inspiration. He is a member of Deafblind Scotland but not only does be benefit from many of the facilities offered but other members benefit from Michael's input into the association. My 90 year old mother (who is giving me, her 68 year old daughter, masses of encouragement and support to do this trek!!) is profoundly deaf and, like Michael, says it makes her feel very isolated.
When I, hopefully, reach Uhuru summit and feel the exhiliration of success and see the fantastic views from 'the top of the World' I will try to remember to close my eyes and block my ears and say "Thank you" to God for my sight and hearing and another thank you for associations such as Deafblind Scotland who work to help those less fortunate to live active, independent and fulfilled lives.
