As well as running in the BUPA Great Edinburgh Run I will also be running the Liverpool 5km in May, the 10km run in Manchester and London and the 10km run in Tatton Park and the Manchester Urbanatholon in August 2009.
Here’s a little bit about what I’ll be doing in for the 2 week volunteering trip. It definitely will not be a holiday!
We will be providing a much needed and greatly appreciated service to the people of the most rural villages of the Andes, the very high
ranges. We will spend 1 or 2 days in each of 4 villages and will provide treatment for up to 800 patients! Working in Health Posts and Schools the project is able to provide restorative and extraction services. Also, we have an important education and prevention program as part of our mission. Patients will walk for days, to reach us. They will patiently wait their turn as you treat the waiting multitude. Children will come with their teachers and learn about Oral Hygiene as well as receive their treatment and new toothbrush. After working in these villages for 4 years, we have become these peoples’ dentist. We will play a key role in continuing this vital care and furthering the advancement of Oral Awareness in this otherwise forgotten region. During the 8 days in the
, the team will be made as comfortable as possible. But with limited resources, this does mean “roughing it”. All the food we will need (and more!) will be taken on the trip and prepared by the team. It is very important to take all necessary precautions to avoid any upset tummies!!!!
The team will spend a few days acclimatizing prior to driving up to 10 hours on poor roads to reach these remote villages.
The charity will appreciate any dental equipment that your surgeries don’t need any more. This can include local anesthetic, filling materials old forceps, etc. I can take these myself in my backpack apparently
