Sitting at home in Kent, Salvatore and Teresa Malluzzo were planning for their son’s return from India. Then, came the news that Patrick had been arrested in Mumbai, accused of smuggling drugs. They later found out, Patrick was not even told why he was arrested. He reported torture by police and was made to sign documents in a language he didn’t understand.
As time passed, Salvatore and Teresa began to hear less and less from Patrick. Eventually came the shocking news that Patrick had been found guilty and sentenced to ten years in jail.
When they received a letter from Patrick, they learnt that proceedings had been in Hindi, and the lawyer they had paid thousands of pounds had failed to turn up to court.
We were able to help find Patrick a good lawyer and, earlier this year, he returned home. FTI helps hundreds of people like Patrick each year to uphold their right to a fair trial, by providing direct legal assistance and campaigning for the better protection of their rights.
