My story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

I will be trekking to the base camp of the world's highest mountain for 14 days to raise money for Helen & Douglas House, Oxford's hospice for children and young adults.

The trek is celebrating 25 years of Helen House, which was the first hospice of its kind in the UK. Helen and Douglas House cost £4million to run each year and have virtually no government funding. As I am self funding for my actual journey, every penny that you sponsor me will go straight to Helen and Douglas House.

My journey begins on Friday, 2 May. On 11 May, I will reach Everest base camp at an altitude of 5,357 metres. On the following day, I will ascend to the summit of a neighbouring peak, Kalapatthar, at 5,647 metres. After the recent problems I had with my health this will be pushing me, and as many of you know camping is NOT my scene. So it is only a cause that is very close to my heart that would persuade me to take on such a major challenge.

You can read more about the trek on the Charity Challenge website and more about the hospices on the Helen and Douglas House website.

As a GP I really value Helen and Douglas House and the support they've given some of my patients over the years. We have had close links with their invaluable work through staff and patients, and greatly appreciate their love and care to some of our most vulnerable patients. This is my way of saying thank you and supporting their work.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Helen & Douglas House will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ON 11th May! Everest Base Camp reached. It was a very tough challenge. Battling with the altitude was extremely hard, and the camping (down to -12C and snow one night) was quite as bad as I had suspected! However, it was an amazing experience. Thanks to everyone for supporting me. Off and online sponsorship now exceeds £5,000 and continues to rise. Many many thanks.

A wonderful adventure and a wonderful cause - my very best wishes for your trek! Jayne x Donation by Jayne Rice 22/01/08
