Thank you for visiting THE FIELD HOUSE TRIATHLON fundraising page.
The students of FIELD HOUSE at Leighton Park School, Reading are supporting the charity Excellent Development to help make water more accessible to communities in Kenya.
Our target is to try to raise £6,000.00 to pay for a sand dam, which will help retain water close to villages and schools, or build a school water tank to provide clean water throughout the year for up to 600 children. However, every little counts and our list below outlines how different amounts can help US make a difference TOGETHER:
£6000 will provide one sand dam which will eventually provide up to 1200 people with a sustainable, year round water supply.
£5000 will build a school water tank that will last for up to 50 years helping generations of school children access clean water and stay healthy.
£2000 will help communities to set up and maintain a tree nursery allowing a community to plant up to 8,000 trees per year.
Even small amounts can have a purpose - £3 will plant a tree in a farm; £5 will plany and endangered tree in a forest; £20 will enable a family to be self sufficient in fuel wood, fruit and building materials; £30 will provide enough water for a family, their animals and a vegetable plot. Every little helps!
Having made the decision to support the work of EXCELLENT DEVELOPMENT in their community self help projects in Kenya we have set ourselves the target of collectively cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End on an indoor cycle in the reception area of our boarding house!
Each individual's contribution to the cycle has been recorded on sheets posted next to the giant map of the UK which shows our day to day progress.
UPDATE: Tuesday 24th March 2009: Journey's end!
JOHN O'GROATS to LAND'S END cycle ride completed! Our venture began at the end of November and was completed yesterday - Monday 23rd March. During the journey seventy-five different people have contributed to the group cycling and rowing 2,550 km.
UPDATE - Monday 23rd March 2009: This morning we had just 8 km to complete the ride. Over the weekend we went through Penzance and saved the final effort for our house meeting at lunchtime - we duly arrived at Land's End at 1.50 pm!
UPDATE - 20th March 2009: We have had a really positive week having past through Dorset and Devon. Our route has taken us through Exeter and Plymouth and over the Tamar Bridge into Cornwall. A good effort by the boarders this weekend will see us in sight of the final destination early next week!
UPDATE - 11th March 2009: During today's ride we went through Reading and past the gates of LP! Quite strange really. Now heading for Basingstoke before a long stretch on the A303.
UPDATE - 8th March 2009: today we have reached London having progressed in the last week or so through Birmingham, Stratford-on-Avon and Oxford. London does not normally feature on a John O'Groats to Land's End ride but, given that the other major cities have been 'ticked off', it was felt that London should be on our route before turning south-west to Cornwall.
UPDATE - 4th February 2009: our cyclists have covered 130 km in last few days, passing south of Manchester, through Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford heading for Birmingham. The recent snow has not dampened our enthusiasm!
UPDATE - 28th January 2009. Since Christmas our riders have completed the cycle around and through the Lake District and then stopped at the port of Heysham to 'row' to the Isle of Man. The 105 km across to Douglas proved quite a challenge for the rowers! From Douglas our party then set off to cycle the main road around the island (where one of our students lives) before finishing back in Douglas.
Back on the mainland, our cycle continued from Liverpool's John Lennon airport, around the city before heading off to Manchester. Our journey so far has covered 1530 km.
Thursday 11th December: Over the last two days our riders have taken us over the border into England and made a large detour to take in the Lake District via the west coast, Keswick and Kendal. We are now en route to Heysham, a port on Morcambe Bay, before rowing to the Isle of Man. To date we have covered 1238 km since leaving John O'Groats two weeks ago.
GROUP APPROACH All of our students are committed to doing their bit to complete the journey and, when we have completed the cycle, the group has plans to row from Land's End to our next destination (as yet unconfirmed).
With many already committed to running in the Reading Half Marathon in March 2009 the running leg of our fund raising is rapidly taking shape.
