In November 2007 I am embarking on a 10 day cycling expedition across : from
Havana
to
Trinidad
(some 350kms) to raise money for the World Society for the Protection of Animals.
A brief over view of the schedule is as follows:
-
Havana
to Playa Jibacoa
- Playa Jibacoa to
Matanzas
-
Matanzas
to
Cienfuegos
-
Cienfuegos
to Hanabilla
- Hanabilla to
Trinidad
I will have to cycle poor uneven roads, dusty roads, many hills with steep climbs, some flat tarmac roads, over rural rail track’s, and several with hilly ups and downs so not an easy bike ride as you can see.
This will be a personal challenge for me as I will have to get my fitness and weight to the correct level before starting this challenge.

Why did I choose the WSPA?
For a world where animal welfare matters, and animal cruelty ends.
For 25 years, the WSPA has aimed to promote the concept of animal welfare in regions of the world where there are few, if any, measures to protect animals.
Politically, they have campaigned to convince governments and key decision makers to change practices and introduce new laws to protect or improve the welfare of animals.
With generous donations from their supporters, WSPA has helped indigenous people set up new animal welfare groups, enabling the local community to have key involvement in the improvement of animals‘ lives.
Understanding that human ignorance is a major factor in the continuation of animal cruelty, WSPA‘s education programmes facilitate a change in people’s attitudes towards animals, and their plight, for the better.
Their rescue teams provide direct help to animals that have been abandoned, neglected or caught up in natural or man-made disasters all over the globe.
WSPA‘s work is focused on four priority animal welfare areas:
- Companion animals - responsible pet ownership, humane stray management and preventing cruelty
(For the 480 million (approx.) stray and unwanted dogs around the world, suffering and death are never far away. WSPA aims to reduce the number of stray animals and combat inhumane treatment through its Stray Control projects).
- Commercial exploitation of wildlife - intensive farming and cruel management and killing of wild animals for food or products.
(Bear baiting is possibly the world‘s most savage blood sport. Teeth and claws removed, bears are tied to a post and set-upon by pit bull terriers. WSPA‘s work has helped to reduce the number of bear baiting events held; opposition to the fights is increasing, but there is still much work to be done).
- Farm animals - intensive farming, long distance transportation and slaughter of domestic animals for food.
(Dogs reared for food in are kept in appalling conditions and once loved pets, now abandoned now end up in the dog meat trade).
- Disaster relief for animals - providing care to animals in distress from man-made or natural disasters
(The human tragedy of these incidents is well documented. Less well known is the plight of animals; all too often, they are the forgotten victims).
