Why your donation matters
Over 11 million South Africans are food insecure.
In South Africa, hunger is not a matter of supply. Enough food is grown, but every day much of that food is wasted.
FoodBank SA is a member of the Global Foodbank Network. We rescue thousands of tonnes of good quality food from leading food retailers, manufacturers and farmers. We then give the food to over 1,000 non-profit organizations that work directly with the hungry (such as crèches, soup kitchens and HIV/AIDS clinics) - who in turn donate the food to the people most in need.
Most of the food is donated to FoodBank, but we rely on financial donations to cover our costs such as warehousing and trucking. The average cost to FoodBank per meal donated in 2010 was less than 15p.
£75 WILL FEED ONE CHILD OR ADULT FOR A YEAR
Case study: donations in action
Joburg Early Childhood Development Centre is an educare centre in the midst of a cluster of men’s hostels in Denver, Johannesburg. Of the 10 children aged four to five at the centre, eight are orphans and six live with caregivers who are unemployed. While the centre asks parents and caregivers for less than £2 a month as school fees, half of them are unable to pay. For many of these children, breakfast and lunch at the centre are the only full meals they will have in the day.
There are over 60,000 learners in centres like Joburg ECD Centre served by FoodBank South Africa.
A donation of £75 will feed 10 to 12 learners at a crèche for a month.
Please don't wait - hunger doesn't!
