Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page:
December 2012 will be the 70 anniversary of the audacious, gruelling and pivotally tactical, “Operation Frankton” better known as, “The Cockleshell Heroes”. Undertaken by ten men of the Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment, the raid on shipping in Bordeaux Harbour dealt a crucial blow to the German war effort but at the very high cost of two men drowned and six caught and executed. For a comprehensive overview of this story please see our web site www.frankton-trail.com
To mark this anniversary, Eric & Craig will be undertaking the first part of the escape route taken by Maj HASLAR & Mne SPARKS, the only two survivors who disembarked from the Submarine HMS TUNA on the night of 7 December 1942. The route, now known as The Frankton Trail, goes from Blaye on the banks of the Gironde River to Ruffec in the Charente Department of France, approximately 160 kilometres. Their aim is to raise as much money as possible for The Royal British Legion annual Poppy Appeal for 2012, a charity that cares not only for Servicemen and women wounded in action in present conflicts but for ALL who are serving or have served in HM Armed Forces and for their dependents and has been doing so for over ninety years.
