Thanks for taking the time to visit my fund raising page for the Beirut Marathon.
Not surprisingly many people have asked me in recent weeks - Why Beirut? Good question considering the Beirut we all know from the news in the 80's and 90's. Firstly, Beirut is safe and peaceful and is pretty much back to the wonderful city it was in the 60's and 70's. The real answer is that having read up in recent years about the middle east conflict I feel that the Palestinian people have been treated dreadfully and I wanted to do something to help. Clearly a marathon along the Gaza strip wouldn't be a good idea and so running in Beirut seemed to be the most relevant thing I could do to show some empathy with the Palestinians.
My first choice charity was Viva Palestina but they have not been able to register with Just Giving in time and so I found this charity, Educational Aid for Palestinians. I looked into what they do and it could prove to be very useful indeed. They give aid to schools and universities in Palestine and also fund scholarships for the brightest students to come to UK universities. I think it's clear that the conflict there will not be solved anytime soon, and so perhaps the most important thing to do is ensure that there is a next generation of well educated statesmen and women who can negotiate and implement a lasting peace in Palestine.
So please sponsor me whatever you can afford to help EAP help the Palestinians to help themselves.
Thanks very much
