Since February 2008 a new trainer structure has been in place at Sunera Foundation, facilitating training, two-way reporting, and co-ordination of events at local and national level. Five Provincial Development Officers (PDOs), one for each of five districts, were appointed from among the most experienced workshop trainers.
FSF is proud to be supporting this project and after more than ten months the ‘cluster’ system is working well, with the PDOs overseeing the Workshop Training Officers and Workshop Leaders in their areas, and reporting every month to the Field Unit at the Sunera Foundation office in Colombo.
The PDOs are coping well with their responsibilities, which include:
* conducting a model workshop as a ‘template’ for the WTOs and Workshop leaders in their cluster,
* evaluating and monitoring the workshops—as well as undertaking the administrative work involved
* increasing support and awareness by fostering good relations with parents, carers, and the local community
* and finally, helping co-ordinate Sunera events at local and national level.
In particular the system is helping to enhance the leadership skills of the PDOs, who in their turn can help the less experienced trainers to take responsibility; while the new reporting system keeps lines of communication open, enabling new ideas to be implemented quickly.
Friends of Sunera Foundation urgently needs to raise £8,000 to continue to support this vital project.
Cluster Leaders are improving the standard of the trainers on the ground and providing a career structure for them - as well as proving an invaluable link between the tiny Colombo office and the workshops.
