My name is Ryan and I plan to row for 100K nonstop to raise money for Cancer Research.

In May 2015, my Mum was diagnosed with aggressive bowel cancer. She underwent surgery during which surgeons removed a cancerous tumor the size of a rugby ball. Initial scans following the operation suggested a positive outlook and after a further 6 months of chemotherapy, the cancer had not returned – so, as you would imagine, we all felt an enormous sense of relief.

Just 6 months later my mum had her CT follow up scan. The scan shows that she had an enlarged kidney. A subsequent MRI scan revealed that the cancer had returned and had taken hold in many parts of her body. Doctors have now confirmed that my mum’s cancer is incurable.
Knowing your Mum will have her life cut short is incredibly hard, but to watch someone you love suffer with cancer and know that there is nothing you can do to take the pain away is utterly unbearable.

I wanted to do something to raise money and decided upon this challenge. Throughout the Rowathon, I will be taking scheduled breaks for food and hydration and to stretch my muscles. I will need support from everyone to complete this task from start to finish, putting my body through considerable strain and fatigue not to mention likely cramps and blisters and, I’m sure, no small amount of pain.

However, I know that this will be merely a very small percentage of what people who are suffering or who have suffered with cancer go through on a daily basis.
I will be starting on Saturday 25th March at 6am and hope to finish by 6pm and would gratefully appreciate any support from rowing or cheering me on.
To anyone else who has a loved one or is experiencing anyone living with cancer I just want to say stay strong and be positive, together we can beat this awful disease.
