We raise awareness of farm safety to support the farmers of tomorrow.

Story

The challenge starts on 4 November and lasts for 7 days. I will be cycling over 460km over hilly volcanic terrain. I will be spending an estimated 9-11 hours per day on the trail in average temperatures of 32 degrees Celsius and camping at night.

I have known several friends to have been effected by accidents in the farming industry and want to show my support to them, as well raise awareness of The Farm Safety Foundation's great work.

The Farm Safety Foundation aims to change attitudes about taking risks and educate young people so as to prevent future accidents. They carry out training and awareness raising projects targeting 16-40 year olds involved in agriculture.

I have self-funded my cycle tour (certainly wouldn't be expecting others to pay for my adventure!). But I thought it would be a good opportunity to raise some funds and publicity for The Farm Safety Foundation.

Rising concern over the continuing high level of fatal and life-changing injury accidents on farms prompted NFU Mutual to set up a charitable foundation to help all farmers, and especially young farmers, work more safely. The Foundation works closely with farmers, the farming unions and a range of farming organisations, including the Farm Safety Partnerships of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, to help reduce the toll of fatal and serious injury accidents which, regrettably, have made farming the most dangerous occupation in the UK. The Foundation's 'Yellow Wellies' campaign specifically targets young farmers aged 16 to 40 years of age.
