In a moment of madness we have decided that we are brave enough to tackle the Whitehaven to Sunderland coast to coast bike ride. This will be an adventure like no other for us and together as a team of 7, Nic, Andrew, Keith, Neil, Colin, Dave and Charlie in the van, we will endeavour to make the journey in 3 days. Setting out with our wheels in the sea at Whitehaven on Friday 1st July we hope to reach the sea at Sunderland all incact and accounted for on Sunday 3rd July.
We are fundraising for the Funzi and Bodo Trust, a charity which supports 2 small Kenyan islands become self sufficient. So far we have built and maintain a medical centre and school on both islands, a Kindergarten, library and resource centre, we run a water ambulance and help cover the costs of medical visits. What we desperately need is somewhere safe for the mothers to be on the islands to have somewhere safe in which to deliver their babies. Your donation is raising money for birthing rooms - two special rooms where women who currently give birth onto mud floors, with no medical provision and huge risks of infection can go to have a safe birth.
The Funzi and Bodo Trust also trains local midwives in a community where people live in mud huts and have no clean running water or electricity. This will be a major step forward and save the lives of babies and mothers.
This journey wouldn't be possible without the support of GRKC ground work and form specialists, in particular Mr Gary R Kilmartin who has donated a van and the petrol costs for the entire journey. Our thanks also go to David Walton at Walton and Company planning lawyers who gave our fundraising an amazing start with a £250 donation.
