This year I am running the Great South Run in aid of Global Tiger Patrol. All of you that know me know that I am very passionate about my role at the Isle of Wight Zoo, connecting our lovely visitors to the wildlife we are helping to protect out in India and Madagascar.
In short, the bottom line is, if we don't start doing something to protect our beautiful tigers in the wild they will disappear, and our children's children will only ever see them in zoos but never in the wild. Fact.
We have lost 97% of our worldwide wild tiger population in the last 100 years, numbers down to an all time low of around 3200.
Global Tiger Patrol have harnessed the passion of the locals for their homeland and native wildlife in the Western Ghats of India and are helping to relocate whole villages outside the reserves with new housing and schools. They have an amazing outreach programme teaching the locals about their native wildlife and how to protect it.
Last year they were instrumental in intervening in 30 poaching incidents in the area. Totally fantastic.
