My name is Gerard Webb and I am planning on doing a sponsored walk across the Great Wall of China on the 9th October 2010 for Diabetes. As I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 7 years ago, I knew nothing about the hidden killer. When I was diagnosed I was terrfied and I thought as so many people must do "why me". Although as time has gone by I have managed to accept it into my every day to day life.

However most people must find it challenging to accept it or even cant cope with it, which is why I believe this charity walk for diabetes is most important. As it will help find solutions to the many problems it causes and maybe one day they will find a cure "fingers crossed".

I also find Diabetes UK a very important organisation as it helps people cope with diabetes.

One final reason why I am doing the sponsored walk for diabetes is becuase at least one third of adults dont know they have diabetes and hopefully the money raised here will go towards more reasearch in preventing millions of people going through troubled times that diabetes causes.

Key Facts about Diabetes:

  • More than 220 million people worldwide have diabetes.

  • In 2005, an estimated 1.1 million people died from diabetes.

  • Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

  • Almost half of diabetes deaths occur in people under the age of 70 years; 55% of diabetes deaths are in women.

  • The World Health Organisation projects that diabetes deaths will double between 2005 and 2030.

  • Healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes

No matter how little or big your donation is every penny will go to JDRF, that money would then be used to support and develop new medicines, get better equipment, help future research in the cause and solution of diabetes. It could even save someones life so please find it in your heart and donate today.
