My story

Q. When is a Gap Yah not a Gap Yah?
A.
When it’s a two-week Ethiopia adventure in aid of the young person’s helpline charity, Get Connected.

This August, I will be part of a team of travellers heading deep into Ethiopia, one of Africa’s most adventurous destinations, for some cultural encounters that few travellers ever experience.

The trip, run by leading overlanding company Dragoman, will include a trek to the Omo Valley, home to the Hamer tribe (who practise bull jumping as an initiation rite!), the Banna and the Abore, whose lifestyles have changed little for centuries. We’ll also be visiting the Awassa Children’s Project, which is an organisation dedicated to housing, feeding and educating children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. This will be a challenging and truly unique adventure in a less-travelled part of Africa.

As a team, we'll be forgoing all our usual western conveniences for a truly authentic experience, all in aid of the incredible charity, Get Connected. The Get Connected helpline offers free and confidential help to children and young people facing difficulty and distress, no matter what problem they're facing, or where they are in the UK.

I'd be really grateful if you would take a moment to sponsor me for this tough but incredibly worthwhile challenge, and therefore make an investment into the lives of children and young people in crisis.

Thank you for your support. It will literally change lives.

Charity Registration No. 1081840

Get Connected is a free telephone, email and webchat helpline service finding young people the best help whatever the problem. Available anywhere in the UK, 1pm - 11pm every day, we can provide free connections to local or national services, and text information to caller's mobile phones. Get Connected's vision is that every young person in the UK can find the help they need to support their emotional and physical wellbeing. There are 11 million young people in the UK. In Get Connected's survey of 2006, 4 out of 5 of young people didn't know where to turn with their problems. Get Connected is the free helpline for these young people, who know they need help but don't know where to find it. With Helpline Workers trained to support each young person in their unique situation and help them choose the best service from over 13,000 in the UK, Get Connected is the vital gateway between a distressing confusing problem the young person can't solve on their own and the service that can help them solve it. Crucially, the connection we make for each young person to their chosen source of help is free as well.
