On behalf of Nelsons Journey I will be aiming to reach the summit of Aconcagua in the highest mountain in South America and the highest mountain outside the . Situated in the and standing 6,962 m (22,830 ft) temperatures are likely to be as low as -30ºC with wind speeds in excess of 100 mph- making it seem even colder! The altitude will also be a problem as oxygen levels at the summit are effectively only 40% of sea level. In comparison stands at 1,085 m (3,560 ft), Kilimanjaro at 5,895 m (19,340 ft) and Everest 8,850 m (29,035 ft).
My challenge will take almost three weeks to complete and will see me constantly climbing up and down the mountain, transferring equipment (and food!) between the various camp sites in preparation for the main summit night. There is a good chance I will be resorting to my ice axe and crampons to make the final push as well as having to carry a fairly heavy pack!
The charity I have chosen, Nelson's Journey, was set up to support bereaved children and young people who have suddenly lost a sibling, parent or other close relation whether it be through a road traffic accident, undetected terminal illness or suicide. The money raised will be used to help bereaved children through organising one to one or group support sessions, activity days and weekend camps. All these events are invaluable to those they are helping providing children with the support they need through perhaps the hardest and most difficult time in their life.
