This year's big adventure (and some would argue the latest in a long series of acts of lunacy) our intrepid trio (Chris, Ben & Paul) have formed a team for the Street Safari rally to Casablanca. What is it? Ok, you buy a car for no more than £100 and then attempt to drive it competitively from Calais to Casablanca in Morocco (or in our case from Lancaster to Casablanca. Sound like fun? We hope so. We now have a car - a beautiful 1986 BMW 728, affectionately known as Minky the Whale, and have been beavering away for months in a dingy garage in Lancaster to get her ready. Like any butterfly she will shortly emerge transformed......unlike any butterfly she won't necessarily be any prettier!
THERE IS HOWEVER A SERIOUS ELEMENT TO ALL OF THIS NONSENSE – HERE COMES THE IMPORTANT BIT SO PLEASE KEEP READING....
Vicky Stockton was a bright and bubbly 23 year old when she collapsed unexpectedly and died in August of 2006. Her friends and family all expected her to live a full and normal life, for them the shock of losing her at such a young age and without any warning was devastating. For everyone else it's a tragedy, but one that is all too common - Vicky was just one of around 8 apparently fit and healthy young people who die in the UK every week of an undiagnosed heart problem. Chris and Ben were both close friends of Vicky's, so our choice of charity for the rally was an easy one. We'd like to raise as much as possible in aid of CRY and the work that they do in support of bereavement, in raising awareness and into improvements in screening so that fewer families must go through what Vicky's has.
