Story

19th April 2008

Hurrah, I competed the Marathon in 4:09:44 and I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have ever done and the most challenging both mentally and physically.

With 2.5 weeks to go to the race, I injured my foot playing football.  I thought it was just a bit of bruising but the pain got worse, so two days later I went to Homerton Hospital for an X-ray, I thought I might have broke my foot, it turns out I had bruised the tissues inside my foot and was told to have complete rest.  This really set me back for my training and I was still in pain two days before the race.  Luckily the day before it started to feel much better and when the day arrived I took plenty of pain killers and just went for it.

The race itself was fantastic the support was amazing, at 13 miles I started to get cramp in my right let, compensating for my foot injury.  When I got to mile 18-19 and see all my family and friends this gave me a real boost which pushed me on for a good five miles.  The last few miles were pretty tough but when I see that finishing line it was the best thing ever.  I had a really great day and it was worth all the pain.

Once again I would like to thank everybody for their generous donations and support along the way.

I did this for you Dad.

22nd March 2008

I would like to say a BIG BIG BIG thank you to everybody for their generous donations so far.  I would like to email everybody personally to thank them but I have no time as I am constantly running and my legs feel like they are going to fall off.

However, training is going well, I have just completed my second run of 20 miles and I must say this is the most demanding physical challenge I have set myself but I will do it for Dad and Motor Neurone's.

I look forward to seeing you all on the day and I will buy you a pint.

January 2008

I am running the London Marathon in memory of my Dad who sadly died from Motor Neurone Disease early last year.  MND is a terrible muscle wasting disease that does not yet have a cure.

I want to thank all the staff and nurses who were a great help to my Dad and family during this terrible time.

All monies raised will go a long way to researching this devastating disease and will also help other MND sufferers and their families have the much needed help and support that we received.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: the Motor Neurone Disease Association will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Please dig deep and sponsor me and I hope to see you on 13th April 2008.

Many Thanks,

Ricky Girling
