Story

Caudwell Children has launched an urgent appeal to help the family of brave youngster, Chloe Moss from Castleford who has flown to America for a three month course of Proton Beam Therapy.

Chloe was diagnosed with a rare form of brain tumour (Anaplastic Ependymoma) in 2009 and has had several operations and 15 months of chemotherapy to try and beat the cancer, but a scan in August this year showed that the tumour had returned.

As a last resort the NHS has commissioned a course of Proton Beam Therapy, a specialist form of radiotherapy which is not currently available in the UK, and requires Chloe and her family to spend three months at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute (UFPTI) in the USA.

Chloe and parents Jason and Lindsey flew to America last week to start the treatment immediately, leaving their jobs, friends and family behind.

Dad, Jason Moss, said: “This has come as a complete shock; the Doctors told us that this treatment gives Chloe a much better chance of beating the cancer but we needed to go as soon as possible. Everyone has been so supportive during Chloe’s battle; the only way we can repay them is doing everything possible to make sure she is OK.”

Caudwell Children stepped in to help cover the cost of staying in the United States for three months and are asking for help to help ensure the family are comfortable and safe during this difficult trip.

Chief Executive, Trudi Beswick, commented: “We work closely with the NHS to try and support children who need this potentially life-saving treatment by helping cover the costs of being away from home for such a long time.

This is an immensely stressful time for Chloe’s family and any help we can give to make their time as comfortable as possible is surely worthwhile, but we can’t continue this support without help. Any donations, large or small will enable us to help Chloe’s family and other families in a similar situation.”

Chloe is expected to return to the UK in January 2014 after spending Christmas undergoing treatment.

Mum, Lindsey Moss, added: “We’ve just got to do whatever it takes. Chloe is our little fighter and we’ll face this latest battle together but we can’t wait to all be back at home.”

 About Proton Beam Therapy

Proton beam therapy is different type of radiotherapy. It uses a high energy beam of protons rather than high energy X-rays to deliver a dose of radiotherapy for patients with cancer.

About Caudwell Children

To date Caudwell Children has provided services worth over £25million to thousands of children with over 500 different medical conditions. The Charity is committed to changing the lives of children by providing specialist equipment, treatment and therapy as well as its annual ‘Destination Dreams’ holiday for families coping with a child’s terminal illness and their Family Support services.

Caudwell Children was registered in March 2000 and is widely recognised as one of the country’s fastest growing children’s charities. Since its inception the charity has doubled every pound raised, achieved through supplier partnerships, which means every pound donated works even harder.

The Charity was founded by entrepreneur, John Caudwell, whose vision was to create a sustainable children’s charity that offered benefactors’ transparency and peace of mind that 100% of their donation was being used to directly change children’s lives.

By donating the cost of the Charity’s annual management and administration overheads, John has guaranteed an efficient way for individuals and businesses to change the lives of thousands of sick and disabled children living in the UK.

John Caudwell remains the Charity’s largest benefactor and sits as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

The Charity’s ambassadors include Hollywood actress and author, Joan Collins, actress Elizabeth Hurley, Rod and Penny Stewart, Peter Andre, Bruce Forsyth and singer, Robbie Williams. The late Boyzone singer, Stephen Gately, was also a Goodwill Ambassador for the Charity.
