Story
The Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction helps civil society to work together more effectively to place the voice and concerns of vulnerable people at the heart of disaster risk reduction policy and practice. We are in urgent need of additional financial support for a groundbreaking project entitled "Views from the Frontline" (VFL). The project fills a critical gap in the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action by providing an independent review of progress made at the local level; where vulnerable people live and work.
Views from the Frontline is an extremely cost-effective initiative due to high levels of ownership and commitment from participating organisations - the hundreds of civil society organisations working on the review are doing so on a voluntary basis with minimal external support. Results from the review in 2009 have had a major impact at the UN Platform, shifting the focus towards the necessity for effective local implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction.
The 2011 survey will focus on the critical issue of Local Governance, identifying ways to accelerate progress at the critical local level; culminating in the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2011. The review is about to be undertaken in seventy countries around the world.
The Global Network Secretariat is currently hosted by Tearfund who are receiving payments on its behalf. All monies raised through this appeal will be used on the VFL project to support regional and national organisations conducting the surveys and the essential coordination infrastructure.
