Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

I first started to raise money for charity by doing silly things in 1999 when I took part in the London Marathon to raise money for Whizz Kidz and raised in excess of £2000. Those who know me will tell you that I am not at all an athletic sort of person and am rather overweight, which was another reason for taking part in marathons!!! I actually walk the marathons so I am restricted to the marathons I can take part in as they all have time limits. My best time is approx. 6 hours 30 minutes and  most marathons have time limits of 5-6 hours. When my last school, Sion Hill Middle, was due to close in July 2007, my site manager Pete Hodgetts and I set out to raise money for Wellchild and Dreams Come True  by taking part in marathons across the world. We managed to raise £7500 with the help of the Sion Hill community.

When I took over as Head at St John’s  CE Primary in Kidderminster last September I decided to repeat the exercise and with the help of the St John’s community, we managed to raise £5250 for Dreams Come True. To date I have completed 8 marathons and 6 half marathons in 10 different countries. Sadly I am not getting any quicker and it isn’t getting any easier, but I’m off again, hoping once again to shed some excess weight!!! Below you will find my programme for 2008-9.

This time I am supporting 2 charities. I have been inspired to support these charities by pupils at St John’s. The 2 charities are Whizz Kidz (inspired by a pupil with mobility problems who brightens up my day everytime I see him) and Noah’s Ark Trust, a local charity which helps children who have suffered a bereavement ( inspired by 2 families of children in school who are being helped by the charity). My target is £1500 for each charity. If you want to support Noah’s Ark Trust   you can donate on this page or if you want support Whizz Kidz you can do so at www.justgiving.com/gordonwhizz

24th August, 2008 -  Quebec City Marathon, Canada - The official records will show that I completed this race in 6h 31m08s in this special year when Quebec City celebrates 400 years. It was a scenic and very well organised race but it was also very hot and very tough and I was suffering from a back injury throughout. A memorable experience nonetheless.

27thOctober,2008-Dublin Marathon,Eire - Completed in 7h 03 m42s. It was a bitterly cold but sunny day and I was still carrying a back injury so was very grateful and relieved to cross the line and receive my precious medal. This was the 10th marathon that I have completed and it certainly does not get any easier

9th November, 2008 -Athens ClassicMarathon, Greece  -  Perfect conditions for my second marathon in 13 days, completed in 6h59m14s

2525th January, 2009 -Miami Marathon,  USA -    I had injured my back on New Year's day so had done no training, so decided to enter the half marathon and finished in 3h34m29secs. It was 60 degs at the start at 6 a.m. and 75 degs at the finish.

26t26th April, 2009 - London Marathon - This was my fourth London Marathon and sadly the first I have failed to complete. I had been ill in the run up so my preparation had not been good. I gave up at mile 15 when my body refused to take me any further! Once again the atmosphere and people of London were truly amazing.
