My story

Gregory Cowan, Australian trained architect cum educator from London, was selected in November 2006 as VSO volunteer 'Architecture Teacher Trainer'  and posted to the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbataar. He is supporting and developing architectural teaching and training at the Construction Technology College.

The project supports the Mongolian college's aims in improving professional built environment education - reinforcing cultural development to build "sustainable livelihoods" (VSO's programme). There are great challenges but also rewards working in architectural education and training in underpriveliged peri-urban Mongolia.

This new volunteer placement was created to support development of an architecture course in a small technology college connected with local construction training projects. There is an identified skills shortage in construction design and the post aims to help teaching staff address this.

I am teaching in English and German with rudimentary Mongolian (Sainbanoo..) and a helpful translator. While in Mongolia I am improving my understanding of Mongolia's nomadic architecture and culture. (gregory.cowan.com/nomadology)

"There are many skills and experences to share, but also a great deal I can learn here. Mongolia is economically very poor, and is low on the Human Development Index, and yet Mongolia rates above both the UK and Australia in terms of human well-being relative to its ecological footprint: see this link."  Hard to believe in this visibly polluted city.

Organising VSO postings involve extensive work by the rganisation internationally, and it costs VSO 15,000 GBP just to support each volunteer placed.

The Mongolia film night at the Salmon and Compass Islington on 28 June 2007 was a great success, raising over £200.  Thank you to everyone who attended including those listed below for your support!  Please see the blog http://nomadologist-nomadology.blogspot.com/ for updates.

We would really value any further support for VSO until end 2007, if you have not done so already, please dig deep and make a donation if you are able.
(Please Gift Aid if in the UK.)
