AMREF is the leading health development organisation in Africa, saving and transforming the lives of some of the poorest and most marginalised people.

I recently returned from a trip to and where I saw, first hand, AMREF’s work in Kibera, one of ’s largest informal settlements, and in Katine village in northern .  AMREF has found a way to make a difference.  So instead of simply working hard, but not actually seing a change, they are beginning to drive a difference.  Why?  Because they’ve got the community engaged as full partners.  So the work that AMREF is doing acts as a catalyst for tremendous change.

AMREF is an important partner for GSK, and we collaborate with them to provide a number of healthcare and disease prevention programmes including, Positive Action which aims to counter stigma about HIV/AIDS and PHASE (Personal Hygiene And Sanitation Education), a schools-based project which helps reduce diarrhoea-related disease by teaching children about the importance of hand-washing and other hygiene practices.

So what can you do to help? Please do give to AMREF and help them to make a difference. Here are some examples of what your donation can buy:

£10 will buy 10 rapid malaria testing kits that will ensure quick and correct diagnosis - essential for the prompt and effective treatment of malaria, preventing avoidable death from the disease, especially for children

£20 will provide a health extension worker with a basic medical kit. Health extension workers provide a vital link between rural communities and the health system, and are stationed at rural health posts

£50 will train and equip a community health worker to be able to educate communities on the importance of good hygiene and how to prevent, control and treat diseases including malaria and HIV/AIDS, and provide them with essential drugs.

£100 will set up and support a school health club which promotes good hygiene and sanitation amongst school children, ultimately improving their attendance and performance at school

£350 will construct a pit latrine in a school which will be utilised by pupils and used to educate community members to build their own latrines and improve the sanitation around their homes.

Thank you for your support.
