My story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! I suffered from M.E. for 5 years, and have since made a complete recovery and have been well for 2 1/2 years. In June 2006, I am taking a month off work and walking across Wales from the South coast to the North coast during the whole of June.

I'm doing this alone and I'll be carrying minimum weight in my rucksack, which will include a sleeping bag and a survival bag for me to sleep rough on the way. I'm offering to give talks to any groups or M.E. sufferers on the way, about my journey through M.E. (and hope someone may offer me a bed
or just a bath).

A few friends have offered to meet me occasionally to give me food and a change of clothes and I'm hoping to have people join me to walk up Mt. Snowdon towards the end of my walk. My route will roughly be: the start near Port Talbot, then via Llandovery, Devil's Bridge, Machynlleth, Cadair Idris, Mt.Snowdon, North Coast. I'll start on 2nd of June and intend to take about 3 to 4 weeks walking, depending if I go off route a bit to give talks etc.

I’m doing this partly as a personal challenge because it’s good to be able to walk again and to raise awareness of M.E., also to raise money for MERGE.
I am being sponsored by Philip Weeks from Botanical Health, Hereford, who played a big part in helping me with my recovery. If you want to know more about how I recovered from being bed-ridden to being able to walk across Wales, please feel free to contact me Tel:  01594 837933 - 07950160389;

e-mail: gwyn@gwynhopkins.co.uk or read my website www.mefatigue.co.uk

So please sponsor me. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: ME Research Group For Education And Support (MERGE) will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.

Gwyneth

UPDATE: I completed the walk 2pm 22/6 at Penmaenmawr on the North Coast, 4 friends and a photographer from the North Wales Weekly News were there to meet me. It was a cold and windy day but as promised I went into the sea and went straight under.

It has been an amazing journey, seeing wonderful scenery, birds, flowers and insects and having plenty of time to enjoy them.

It has tested my indurance and map reading skills and I'm feeling fitter now than when I started.

But most of all I will remember the people I met along the way that have made this such a special experience. I've been shown so much kindness and friendship from total strangers who have given me food, drinks, good conversation, money for MERGE and endless hugs and kind words of encouragement. Thank You to the people of Wales and to my freinds that drove miles to visit me and give me food parcels.
