My story
Hacked Off began life when it looked as though News International might escape unscathed from the voicemail hacking scandal. Now there is a public inquiry and we are working to ensure that this unique opportunity for change is not wasted.
We want to see real change of a kind that will deter illegal and unethical practices while protecting and encouraging journalism that is in the public interest. We also want to ensure that victims of press abuses get their stories before the public without fear of retribution.
As you know, there are powerful vested interests that oppose change, and we expect their opposition to be sustained and resourceful. This means that we need to be strong and active, and for that we need your help.
Below you will find a list of some of our activities to date, and some of our plans. We want to do more.
If you could donate we’d be incredibly grateful. Other supporters have generously promised that whatever you give will be matched.
Yours,
Martin Moore and Brian Cathcart
Founders of Hacked Off
To date, Hacked Off has:
• Called for a full public inquiry into phone hacking
• Helped frame the terms of reference of the Inquiry – as acknowledged by the Prime Minister on 20th July 2011
• Held fringe events at all three main party conferences and had meetings with David Cameron, Ed Miliband, and Nick Clegg to keep up pressure for change
• Attended and reported on all Leveson seminars and hearings – at www.hackinginquiry.org and via @hackinginquiry
• Published all the documentation related to Leveson
• Helped prompt and co-ordinate submissions to the Inquiry from NGOs and minority groups targeted by the press in the past
• Supported some of the victims of phone hacking and other press abuse
• Campaigned for changes to the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill to protect access to justice for ordinary people
Over the next year Hacked Off wants to continue and extend this work.
