I will be traveling through Africa on public transport and will be using this adventure to raise funds for a charity called Pump Aid. Our journey will take us through the mysterious and unique West Coast of Africa. Arriving in Morocco, we will make our way down Mauritania and the Sahara desert and into luscious Senegal and Mali and Ghana. From here we will pass through Nigeria and coming into Cameroon, we will climb the highest peak in West Africa, Mt. Cameroon, home to the legendary footrace, The Race of Hope. From here we will fly, due to time constraints, to East Congo where we will travel through Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. And finally, we will make our way down the beautiful East Coast of Africa including Mozambique, and my journey will end in Cape Town, South Africa.

884 million people are living without access to clean water; 2.5 billion people are living without something as basic as a toilet. Pump Aid exists for the purpose of providing African communities with clean water and basic hygiene facilities. Their main operations are in Malawi and Zimbabwe with pilot projects in Mozambique. They are also looking at extending their reach into other Africa countries. Pump Aid is famous for its simple technology and has won many awards with its Elephant Pump, which is fully maintainable by the community.

What I like about this charity is their holistic approach to development. By bringing clean water to these communities, they aim to protect woman’s rights, enable children to attend a full day’s schooling, and stimulate small-scale agriculture and hence fight poverty. This is a grassroots organization that works in full consultation of the local community. On the ground, they employ only locals that give them a sense of ownership.

My donation page is at: http://www.justgiving.com/hakuna-matata09/, which will transfer your donation directly into Pump Aid’s account.

Please contribute to this charity for the chance of bettering someone’s life today. I will be looking to raise £2,000 – enough for 4 Elephant Pumps. A little goes a far way with this charity and for £500 an Elephant Pump can be installed which will provide 250 people with 40l of clean water everyday.

Thank you for your time.
