My story

David Kerr takes on the toughest footrace on Earth, in aid of the Halcrow Foundation

Running six back-to-back marathons in as many days in temperatures topping 50 degrees centigrade is clearly not for the faint-hearted – or for those who qualify for a free bus pass.

Unless you’re David Kerr, that is. Halcrow’s group board director – who can claim both milestones – will be taking part in the wildly ambitious Marathon des Sables in Morocco’s Sahara Desert – often dubbed the toughest footrace on Earth.
David will be embarking on his gruelling epic to raise funds for the Halcrow Foundation, a UK-registered charity for which he is also chairman.

David has been training five days a week for over six months to prepare for his North African adventure, for which he will have to carry everything he needs except water – such as food, clothes, medical kit and his sleeping bag.

Established in 2005, the Halcrow Foundation has built homes and schools, as well as clean water and essential sanitation facilities across Asia and Africa. Other projects have focused on developing the tools and techniques for communities to generate their own income, like fishing boats in Indonesia or female-led cottage industries in rural India. The charity also supports disadvantaged people across the UK.

To reward David’s faith in his abilities to complete such a mammoth undertaking, all he asks of you is that you show your support by pledging a donation to the Halcrow Foundation.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor David: the Halcrow Foundation will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28 per cent in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.

An amazing challenge - look after yourself though. Please tell us all about it next time you are in Glasgow Donation by David Urquhart 11/03/08
