My story

TOTAL COLLECTED NOW OVER £12 000

On Tuesday 8th September at midday, Doug (Monty) Hamilton-Cox reached Wootton Bassett to be warmly greeted by members of the Town Council, ex-servicemen and members of Wootton Bassett and District Rotary Club. Town Crier Owen Collier  rang the bell as Doug  arrived at the memorial in the town centre. Dougʼs walk had taken him through the centres of Exeter, Cullompton, Uffculme, Wellington, Taunton, Bridgwater, Burnham-on-sea, Weston-super-Mare, Bristol, Calne and Chippenham.  The support and encouragement he received throughout from the Avon and Somerset Police, Army cadets, coastguards, British Legion and members of the public was exceptional.  In Bristol on 5th September, supported brilliantly by the Bristol Army Cadet Force, Headley Park Detachment, over £1000 was raised. Weston-super-Mare Town Council offers its support and the mayor, Dr Mike Kellaway-Marriott, rounded up the money collected in the town to £300. The picture in the archive shows the mayor with Doug and Mr Dick Whittington, a Burma Star veteran who joined Doug's walk in the town.

Doug and and his wife Sue would sincerely like to thank everyone supporting and contributing.

This website will remain open for several weeks.  Here is Doug's story:

ONCE A SAPPER, ALWAYS A SAPPER!

I served around the world with the Royal Engineers from 1959 - 1971. I have always felt a great affinity with and admiration for our servicemen and women in times of conflict. These feelings have intensified over recent months since, with my wife and brothers, I have been attending repatriations of our fallen heroes with the wonderful people of Wootton Bassett. The courage and dignity of the families and friends of the fallen, and the respect and admiration shown by the thousands who attend the repatriations and the parades of returning troops around the country, demonstrates how highly the British people value our Armed Forces. Feeling very humbled and inadequate by all I have witnessed of late I decided I wanted to do my bit by raising money for Help for Heroes.

But what to do?

There's not much you can do as an individual. Sponsored walk? Not that old chestnut! Then it hit me - that old chestnut, yes! But make a bit of an effort.

So I have decided to walk from my home on Dartmoor to Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire, taking an indirect route so as to walk through towns on the way - a total distance of approximately 140 miles. The walk began on 27th August 2009 and finished on 9th September 2009.

I hope you will join me in showing our appreciation of the great job our troops are doing and dig deep to support this fundraising event.

So please dig deep and donate now.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this worthwhile cause.  It is very much appreciated and I hope to considerably increase the amount raised over the coming weeks.

Thank you again for your support:

Doug Hamilton-Cox
