My story

Help for Heroes Sponsored Walk: Dartmoor to Selly Oak Hospital Birmingham

After our successful Help for Heroes walk to Wootton Bassett last year raising a fantastic £12,582, we were at a loss what to do next.   I wanted to do another sponsored walk.  Sue, my wife and back up team on my previous walk, was not so sure.

We decided to deliver the money we had raised to the Help for Heroes office at Tidworth in person. What a good decision!!

The reception we were given by the almost entirely voluntary office staff was so heart warming. They made us feel very special.

We were amazed and impressed to discover first hand that an organization that has raised over £35 million, work in such an austere office staffed mainly by volunteers.  This ensures that all money raised for Help for Heroes is used for the purpose intended by donors, for the benefit of our wounded service men and women and not for running costs and expenses.

When we left Help for Heroes, feeling very uplifted, I saw the look on Sue's face and said "You want us to do more now don't you?"   Sue simply nodded.   When we returned home we were at a loss to decide where I could walk next which would carry the same significance as Wootton Bassett.

The BBC came to our rescue when they screened the documentary 'Wounded' which showed the inspirational courage shown by our severely wounded soldiers and their families on their return to the U.K.   Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham is their first port of call in this country, so that is what I have to do.   I will walk from my Dartmoor home to Selly Oak Hospital ably supported once again by Sue.

Please help me in my aim to surpass the amount we raised last year to go to support our brave soldiers.
