Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On Sunday 4th May 35 of Dame Hannah's superstaff and friends will be donning their Superhero capes and abseiling off the Mount Batten Abseiling wall in Plymouth.

We are doing this to attempt to raise the last £10,000 towards building our sensory room.

Over the years Dame Hannah's has developed dramatically to enable children and young adults with profound medical conditions to live as enriching and normal lives as possible.

We have been fundraising to create a sensory room in our Adult Care services here in Ivybridge for about a year now. A sensory room is so important as the majority of the young adults here have sensory impairments and being submerged in a sensory environment will be so beneficial for them. For some, sensory stimulation is the only form of communication due to their medical conditions and just by being in a room full of lights can really make such a huge difference!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI6wYDTwy0c shows an example of a sensory room and the impact it has on individuals.

An example of how much difference a sensory room will make - We have a young lady who attends here who has cerebral palsy, a visual impairment, kyphosis, scoliosis and epilepsy which she suffers daily with seizures from. She is in a wheelchair and generally has her head resting on her left hand which as a result she suffers with neck aches, sores and struggles to keep her head up. She is mainly asleep in her chair even when there is a social event or activity going on. That is until she has sensory lights around her! Her eyes light up and she starts to smile! She has a visual impairment however seems to be able to see the lights that light up her world! Her head lifts from her hand and her head moves around taking in every single twinkle in the room. While in this sensory environment she is not resting her head on her hand - resulting in less pressure sores and as she is more relaxed her seizure activity becomes less frequent (although these are also triggered by other things).

We have about thirty young adults that we provide our adult care services for here at Dame Hannah. Not only will it be beneficial for the adults who live here but I run an adult social night every week where adults in the community can come and make new friends and take part in various activities including karaoke nights, pub quizzes, gigs with local music acts, discos; the sensory room will be available for them to use as well as there are hardly (if) any sensory rooms or spaces available in the community so this will mean we are able to build our communications within the community and bring more people to us, helping not only our young adults but many more in the community and from other organisations.

We have organised fun days, a prize draw and I also recently cycled 450km from Vietnam to Cambodia in the hope to raise the full £20,000. we have also had some kind donations including donations from Plymouth Community Homes and Alice Gullick. So far we have raised £9,300 so we are halfway there!!

Any donations will be most appreciated!

Thanks, Hannah's Heroes :-)
