The wooden sea defences built in the late '50s at Happisburgh, a wonderful village on the North Norfolk coast, have been falling into disrepair over the last few years, and large chunks of the sandy cliffs are regularly falling into the sea. Over the last 15 years over 25 properties have been lost - owners get no compensation. Read more >
The uncertainty over the future shape of the coastline has had a terrible impact on the community - property values have been affected, people feel trapped and abandoned.
But there is hope - starting in February, limited works are being carried out by North Norfolk District Council to build on the emergency works carried out in 2002 when 4,000 tonnes of rock were placed at the foot of the cliff and made a significant difference, but it wasn't enough. The plan this time is to put as much rock down again to supplement what's already there, but to create a more 'engineered' solution, buying time for the village while a more sustainable long term solution to the situation is sought.
Coastal Concern Ltd is a charity set up in 2004 by nine residents of Happisburgh expressly to raise funds to provide sea defences for Happisburgh. The next few weeks presents a unique opportunity to make a real difference to the protection of Happisburgh's cliffs and thus the future of the village - by donating to the 'Buy a Rock for Happisburgh' appeal, all monies raised will be added to the amount commited by NNDC to put more rock on the beach at Happisburgh. Every pound counts! Any additional funds raised will buy more rock allowing a better solution, protecting a wider stretch of cliff, and making a bigger difference over a longer period of time.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to 'Buy a Rock for Happisburgh': Coastal Concern Ltd will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Many thanks for your support.
