My story

Hi

WE DID IT! We got back yesterday (15th) after cycling what ended up being 242 miles - and there were plenty of hills. I managed to cycle the whole route without getting off and pushing my bike once (which is an achievement in its self for me!) needless to say I don't fancy sitting on a saddle for a few days yet! Thank you so much to everyone that has sponsored us. Next year we might just do the 6 dayer!! (450 miles!)

We’re cycling 235 miles from Paris to Hayling Island (Portsmouth) over 3 ½ days in July to raise money for the National Clinical FES Centre at Salisbury District Hospital – please sponsor us!

Who are the National Clinical FES Centre and what do they do?
The only one of its kind in the UK, the FES centre at Salisbury Hospital, supply a range of electrical stimulators that have been proven to improve the walking of patients who suffer from a condition called ‘dropped foot’ as a result of brain injury. Drop foot is the inability to lift the foot as it is brought forward, often causing it to drag or catch making walking difficult and suffers more prone to falls. By applying electrical pulses (Functional Electrical Stimulation, FES ) to the appropriate leg muscles, the dropped foot can be corrected.

Why are we raising money for them?
I have been using the ‘Odstock Dropped Foot Stimulator’ for the past year (for those that don’t know I (Mo) had a brain Haemorrhage in 1987, age 12) and it has been fantastic, greatly improving my walking and balance.  But, the funding the centre gets is limited so we wanted to raise money (and awareness) to help others who suffer from this condition.

Some facts:
Since 1998 the FES centre has treated over 2000 people from across the UK

The electrical stimulation is applied either by skin surface electrodes or by implanted electrodes

Typical improvements include:

q       Improved speed and reduced effort

q       Improved balance

q       Reduced falls

q      Improved confidence

Costs (approx):
Odstock (external)
1st years set up £1,300
Yearly follow ups: £480

Simu-step (implant)
Implant operation and years follow up £6,400

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Salisbury District Hospital Charitable Funds will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor us!

Many thanks for your support.
