Sandblast is a London-based arts and human rights charity. It works with the Saharawis of Western Sahara, empowering them to tell their own story, promote their own culture and earn a living through the arts. The Saharawis have lived in refugee camps in Algeria ever since Morocco occupied their country, Western Sahara, in 1975.

In February 2012 I am planning to visit the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria to run a marathon through the Sahara Desert...

This may seem like strange behaviour given that I have never run a marathon before let alone between refugee camps in one of the worlds dryest and hottest climes. BUT! This madness is for a very worthwhile project.

The money raised will allow a team of drama and movement therapists (myself included) to run a research project within the landmine victim centre, the prison and the special needs schools on the refugee camps. This research will then enable Olive Branch Theatre and the charity Sandblast to plan and raise further funds to return to the camps and deliver training and run future creative therapeutic projects.

The Saharawi Refugees are the forgotten people of the Western Sahara who have been living in exile in the harsh Algerian desert since 1975. For more information about the Saharawi plight please watch the attached video of the theatre projects and check out Sandblast's website.
