27th February 2008 You'll be glad to hear that things have calmed substantially in Kenya, and I will be working with AfCiC as planned. I will be joining the NGO at the end of March so please consider this webpage up and running again! Thanks for your patience.
29th January 2008 I unfortunately received an email today from AfCiC in Kenya updating me on the current situation in Kenya. I have been asked to delay my flight for another month as the stability in Thika may be under question. In light of this, I'd ask for you to not make anymore donations on this webpage whilst I consider the options available to me. If you would like to make donations directly to the charity please go to www.justgiving.com/actionchildren. Thank you. 12th January 2008 As you have probably seen on the news, the contested elections in Kenya have led to rioting, violence and a rise in humanitarian concerns in parts of the country. I have delayed my start date with AfCiC to the 2nd February, to allow for the situation in Kenya to stabilise. The Thika district where AfCiC is based is receiving an influx of people displaced from Western Kenya. AfCiC are offering trauma counselling and support to these individuals, as well as continuing to work with the children already at the Centres. I feel my work with AfCiC is now more important than ever, and am counting down the days until I can fly out. So please continue to donate on this website, and at www.actionchildren.org. We would be grateful for your support. Thank you.
22nd August 2007 I will be joining the Action for Children in Conflict (AfCiC) Team in Thika, Kenya as a mental-health aid worker for 6 months. As you can see from the charity's blurb on the left, AfCiC works with children and young people who have suffered violence and neglect by helping reintegrate them back into families, education or work and community. The AfCiC programme in Thika focuses on the prevention and rehabilitation of street children by providing educational, psychological, legal and family support. I will be working alongside the counsellors and social workers at the AfCiC's Day and Residential Interim Centres in the intensive rehabilitation and family reintegration work they do. This includes individual/group therapy with the children, and developing the AfCiC's foster programme in the community. I would be so incredibly grateful for any donation, big or small, you could offer to support my aid work in Kenya. Any money donated here will be directly transfered to AfCiC in the UK, who will put the funds aside for my post. So please sponsor me and I will forever be in your debt! Huge, huge thank you, Helena p.s. Incase you may have already come across it, I also have another website (www.justgiving.com/helenakaliniecka). I created this webpage as I'm conscious of the fact that my surname is rather difficult to remember! I would like to clarify that the £1,200 raised offline is the total amount I have for both web pages. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: AFPIC International in the UK Ltd will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
