This grant giving Fund commemorates the life of Michael Varah, and the work he was prevented from finishing by his early death. It supports the causes that Michael believed in and worked to alleviate: disadvantage and social exclusion, homelessness and poverty, crime prevention and rehabilitation of offenders, human rights.

My story

Dear friends and family. Thank you for visiting the fundraising page we've set up in case you'd like to give us a wedding present. The Michael Varah fund is run by a friend whose father was chief probation officer in Surrey and saw the formidable difficulties that ex offenders can face when they try to rebuild their lives. The charity, founded in 2007, pours its money and energy into rehabilitating prisoners both before and after they are released. It also tackles the wider issues that can cause people to spiral into habitual criminal activity. Last year the charity was involved with the production of a series of films directed by ex-offenders and starring young people at risk of crime. It has also funded an artist in residence scheme at the closed female prison at Send in Woking and is working with a group that teaches sewing to prison inmates.
