Highgate's Fresh Water Warriors!
About the charity : The Muscular Help Foundation The Muscular Help Foundation
MHF is a small charity with a razor-sharp focus – we deliver unforgettable Muscle Dreams designed to help children and young people in the UK whose lives are afflicted by the muscle wasting disease muscular dystrophy (MD), the opportunity to live a dream, or perhaps fulfil a cherished ambition. MD is the single biggest genetic killer of children in our world today. It is a relentless and unforgiving disease. With some 60,000 UK sufferers being robbed of their mobility, independence and finally for those with the most severe type, mainly children, their lives – MHF is in the business of delivering experiences for people directly affected by this debilitating disease. Muscles bind us together universally – they are the engine that our bodies use to turn energy into motion. They allow us to simply move – work with us to leverage your organisations employee, brand and financial muscle, and help MHF deliver more Muscle Dreams.

Personal message:

We are ... Laurens Holve, Andrew Conway, David Learmont, Grahame Andrew, Steve Richards, Steve Brooks, Rick Baker, Alan Borthwick, Crispin Tucker, Marc Gerstein and Justin Stevens

Welcome to the official Highgate Ironmen fundraising webpage – we flex our warrior muscles every week on Hampstead Heath by running 6 miles and then plunging into the Highgate Men's Pond for a brisk swim!

Through a life-long friendship between our 4th Leader (Laurens Holve) and muscular dystrophy sufferer Michael McGrath (our charities inspiring CEO and the only disabled person in the world to have reached both North and South Poles), we are aiming to raise money to fund one or more Muscle Dreams designed to help those living with muscular dystrophy live a dream, or perhaps fulfil a cherished ambition … in the Highgate and Hampstead community.

Muscle Dreams cost from £250 to £5000 depending on what they are. Those who donate will, if they wish, be able to see how their support is used, whether it be for a child meeting a famous TV celebrity chef, the school run of a lifetime or even personally meeting the Highgate Ironmen!

We are currently 12 men who live in or near to Highgate and Hampstead. Our unconventional 'Ironmen Group' activities have a distinctive character of their own; we come from all walks of life and subscribe to our own unique 'Ironman Code of Honour'. Some might say we're eccentric but those who know of us, recognise the ‘socially-aware’ characteristics of a high-performing team, a single-minded, eclectic gathering, ages ranging from early 40's to early 60's.

The media have candidly described us as ‘fresh water warriors’ and our reputation for being ‘slightly unhinged’ grows exponentially! We’ve stripped for our charities Born to Give Pleasure 2008 Muscle Calendar, we’ve featured on billboards across North London, made front-page news in the Ham & High Express, exposed in YouTube appearances and on March 18th 2008, spectacularly splashed across the centre-fold pages of London Lite, a free newspaper published by Associated Newspapers with a growing distribution of nearly 825,000 Londoners!

Our ‘masochistic tendencies’ began over 5 years ago and today we have grown into a group of 12 idiosyncratic individuals, with a mean age of circa 45 years! Let it be known that we are looking to recruit more muscle warriors to join us ... as well as sponsors to support future endeavours and media activitiesinterested parties should contact us by clicking here

Muscular dystrophy is a muscle wasting disease that remains the single biggest genetic killer of children in our world today – please give as generously as you can. Our charity will receive your money faster and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at absolutely no cost to you
