Why your donation matters
Main aim: To enable the worlds poorest families and their children to rise out of poverty What do we do? Hope for a Child enables Co-operative Financial Services to the worlds poorest communities. How do we do it? We provide trainers to set up and train groups within the community to run Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA), the members pool their resources, lend money to each other, and start businesses What are the results? Financial security means families can fully support their own children, and have the capacity to absorb orphans into their families, receiving nutrition, shelter, education, healthcare and well-being We believe in giving a help up rather than a handout. Children's lives are changed when whole communities rise out of poverty.
Case study: donations in action
Kirongosi Ayuby has 5 children and a wife. Kirongosi is a poultry farmer who had 15 chickens provided an income of about £27.50 a month. Lack of capital meant that it was difficult to feed and keep the birds healthy, so the business was unable to grow. Kirongosi joined a VSLA Group in February 2009 where he saved £1.60 per week. He took out a loan that he invested in his business. The loan enabled him to increase the number of birds and he was able to buy feed and medication for the poultry. This has led to an increase in egg production and a new monthly income of about £55 per month so doubling his income! By the end of 2010 Kirongosi had also built a permanent house for his family.
